Newport Police were dispatched Saturday after receiving a call about a man wielding a machete and threatening employees at Burger King. His vehicle made it fairly easy for police to find him.

According to an incident report, when NPD Patrolman Elis Suggs arrived on scene, he was told the suspect, later identified as Jonathan Mayeux, 54, had left in a black Jeep that had a Louisiana temporary tag displayed in the window with bullhorns stuck to the hood and a box container on top of the vehicle.

Burger King employees pointed out the vehicle traveling southbound on Cosby Highway and Suggs was able to make a traffic stop with blue lights near Bojangles. A black machete was seen in the passenger seat and the report notes an odor of marijuana was detected. Mayeux was ordered to step out of the vehicle and was found to have a suspended driver’s license out of Louisiana.

Per the report, he admitted to smoking THC from a pipe earlier in the morning “when the sun was coming up around 4 a.m.” He is reported to have performed poorly on standardized field tests and was placed under arrest for suspicion of DUI and driving on a suspended license and placed in the back of the patrol vehicle.

Mayeux then reportedly became irate and was told to stop striking the patrol vehicle’s window. He then attempted to exit the vehicle and had to be placed back inside.

He was transported to the Cocke County Jail Annex for blood sample and chemical testing but after initially giving consent, he declined to provide it. He was then found have confirmed full-extradition warrants out of Colorado and New Mexico.

The employee at Burger King indicated he did not wish to pursue charges.

Mayeux was charged with DUI, violation of implied consent law and driving while license suspended with an accompanying bond of $17,000 according to the Cocke County Sheriff’s Office. He was also being hold on two counts of fugitive from justice.
