Avery High School announces graduation-related activities

NEWLAND — As the 2023-24 school year nears its completion, Avery County High School has released a number of important graduate-related events to celebrate and honor the students comprising the Class of 2024.

Senior Athletic Banquet

Avery senior student-athletes will come together at 6 p.m. on Friday, May 24, for the school’s annual Senior Athletic Banquet. The event will be held at the Avery Cooperative Extension Community Building at 661 Vale Rd. in Newland. Parents and students are invited to attend this nice/business casual attire event. The event is free for senior student-athletes, with a $15 charge per guest, with a maximum of two guests.

Senior Walk

On, Tuesday afternoon, May 28, the Viking seniors will get their steps in for the day at their elementary and middle school alma maters for their Senior Walk, as they return in cap and gown to walk the halls of the schools they previously attended, surrounded by exuberant students and former teachers wishing them well. Students are asked to meet at the ACHS student parking lot at noon, and all students will ride buses to their respective schools. Elementary school walks will begin at 1 p.m., with middle school walks occurring at 2 p.m. Seniors will be bussed back to ACHS by 2:50 p.m.

Capping Ceremony

Avery High senior students and family are invited to participate in a capping ceremony at Avery High School Gymnasium beginning at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, May 28 (seniors are asked to arrive at 4:30 p.m.). Seniors are asked to dress nice/business casual with their cap and gown.

Senior Brunch

In what has become a graduation day tradition, Avery seniors will congregate one additional time before the big evening for a Senior Brunch at the mid-level commons of Avery High School on Friday morning, May 31. The brunch will begin at 10 a.m., with graduation practice immediately following at 11 a.m. Student dress is casual for the brunch and practice.

Graduation

Avery County High School invites family, friends and the community to its 2024 Commencement exercises at the school, which will take place at Avery High School’s MacDonald Stadium beginning at 6 p.m. on Friday, May 31. Attire for the event for senior students is nice/business casual, with cap and gown.
