HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT)- Following an inspection of the Fortress of Fun playground in Newburgh, the Parks and Recreation Board has officially decided to close the town staple.

The playground was initially announced to be demolished in March, but was met with mixed reactions from Newburgh residents, with the Parks and Recreation Board saying that it was their intention to keep the fortress open through the summer pending the inspection.

    Early voting begins in Kentucky

The board officially voted to close the Fortress of Fun on Thursday, saying that an assessment of the playground shows underground rot and other structural issues. Some Newburgh residents like Melinda Mitchell say that more could have been done to save the playground. “So many people were involved and so much money was raised,” said Mitchell. “That’s why the passion is so strong with this particular park instead of, you know like the splash pad or anything else, because it was the whole community being involved to make it happen.”

The Parks board says that it is working on replacing the Fortress of Fun with a new and better playground in the future.
