Double shooting leaves 1 dead in Newburgh, police seek public's help to make arrest

Newburgh city officials are seeking the public's help in what they call an "extremely, active, ongoing investigation" into a double shooting that left one man dead and another fighting for his life in the hospital.

Family of friends of the 25-year-old man who died created a memorial of candles and balloons at the scene, and held an informal ceremony in his memory.

His family asked that he not be identified until police release his name.

He and a 20-year-old man were both shot.

"He was a good kid," neighbor Kim Diaz said of the deceased victim. "Very respectful and everything. Whoever did this, they need to turn themselves in so their family can get the peace."

Police responded to Hasbrouck Street just before 11:30 p.m. Monday on a report of gunshots through the 911 emergency system.

Police Commissioner Jose Gomerez said the victims were found together.

"The officers came in and found the victim in the car," Gomerez told News 12 at the scene. "They rendered aid and took one to the hospital."

The 20-year-old, a New Windsor resident, has life-threatening injuries, police said in a press release.

The 25-year-old – who police said was also from New Windsor but clearly had strong ties to Newburgh – was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police have not released any information about persons of interest or a motive.

No arrests have been made.

Police are asking that anyone who may have been in this area at the time of the incident and have information that could help investigators to call the department immediately at 845-569-7509.

Susan Timmer owns the property, next to the crime scene, but has been out of town lately attending to family business.

She returned Tuesday with flowers and soil to add to the memorial.

She hopes someone comes forward with information that can lead to an arrest, as rumors circulate through the neighborhood.

"It's too much, people getting killed and hurt," she said becoming choked up, "for no reason."
