The terms of three Newberg City Council members will lapse at year’s end, and the city is looking for those among the citizenry who would like to be the next person up.

The four-year terms of Mike McBride (District 5), Molly Olson (District 3) and Elise Yarnell-Hollamon (District 1) end Dec. 31, and the individuals who garner the most votes in the November general election will assume their four-year seats Jan. 2.

Those wishing to file for the council spots can begin doing so June 5 and continue through Aug. 17 in anticipation of the Nov. 5 general election. While candidates must live within the district they are running for, the council positions are “at large,” meaning the entire electorate chooses who sits on the council. Visit the city's council district map at www.newbergoregon.gov/citycouncil to determine the boundaries of each district.

In order to run for office, successful applicants must be registered voters in Oregon and must have lived in the city for 12 months immediately preceding the election. Residents can qualify for election by either filing a declaration of candidacy and a petition and collect 25 signatures of qualified, legal voters of the city or file a declaration of candidacy and pay a $25 filing fee.

For more information, visit www.newbergoregon.gov/citymanager/page/elections , call City Recorder/Elections Officer Rachel Thomas at 503-537-1283 or email her at cityrecorder@newbergoregon.gov.

Neither Olson or McBride responded to inquiries whether they will seek re-election as of Wednesday afternoon. Yarnell-Hollamon, however, said she will seek another term in office.
