The three recently re-elected members of Newark City Council were sworn in during a brief ceremony Thursday.

The ceremony took place in Alderman's Court due to the ongoing renovations to council chambers. Council members each serve two-year terms.

District 3 Councilman Jay Bancroft earned his third term April 9 after defeating two challengers. A retired entomologist, Bancroft lives in the Spring Hill neighborhood and said this will be his final term.

District 5 Councilman Jason Lawhorn was unopposed for his fourth term. A U.S. Navy veteran, Lawhorn lives in Fairfield and works as a senior research scientist for Advanced Materials Technologies in Wilmington.

District 6 Councilman Travis McDermott was unopposed for his third term. He lives in the Hunt at Louviers and works as a senior lieutenant in the New Castle County Police Department.

His council colleagues reappointed McDermott as deputy mayor, a position he has held since 2021.
