Sam Rosen to miss games in Rangers’ radio booth after health scare before Panthers series

Beloved Rangers broadcaster Sam Rosen is doing well after an apparent health scare, but will not be on the call for numerous playoff games as he recovers.

ESPN New York’s Don La Greca told listeners during “The Michael Kay Show” that Rosen had been dealing with “some dizziness” and went to the hospital recently, but was doing well since.

Rosen has been a part of the Rangers’ ESPN radio broadcast team following the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, when television broadcasts are only carried by the league’s national rights partners.

“I’m also doing Games 2, 3 and 4 of the series filling in for Sam Rosen,” La Greca said during the program. “Sam is OK, but I know there’s a lot of people wondering what’s going on with Sam. He was suffering some dizziness. He had to go to the hospital. He got a clean bill of health. He’s OK. All is fine, but he did have a little bit of an issue.”

La Greca added that Rosen wouldn’t be able to fly and would not be able to do Friday’s game at the Garden while he rested up.

Game 1 had fallen to La Greca due to storms in the Midwest impacting the travel of fellow broadcaster Kenny Albert, who apparently was slated to call the series opener for radio broadcaster.

Albert is also scheduled to call the Western Conference Final for TNT and didn’t want to run the risk of having any sort of travel-related issues.

“He’s got to leave today to make sure he gets to Dallas before the weather, so that opened the door for me,”  La Greca said.

Rosen has been a part of Rangers’ broadcasts dating back to the 1984-85 season.

The Rangers are battling the Panthers in the postseason for the first time since 1997, when the Blueshirts defeated Florida in five games in the first round.
