Local woman charged for speeding away from traffic stop, crashing into house with child in car

A woman is facing multiple charges after police say she sped away from them when they attempted to pull her over around 1 a.m. Thursday, crashing into a home and causing other damage to property and vehicles on North Street.
They say this all happened while her young son was in the car.
Just after 1 a.m. Thursday, the family living at 912 North Street in New Kensington woke up to a loud bang. The homeowner didn’t want to show his face on camera, but he said it felt like a tornado.
“My whole house started shaking,” he told Channel 11′s Andrew Havranek.
But it wasn’t a tornado.
“It was a car! Lodged in my front porch!” he said.
The car, which police say was driven by Tyra Carter, crashed into the front right corner of the home.
“I was like, this is not happening,” the homeowner said.
According to the criminal complaint – New Kensington Police tried to pull Carter over for running a stop sign on Freeport Road. Police said Carter ran a red light, turned off all the car lights, and turned onto North Street, speeding.
Looking at tire tracks – police said she crashed into a set of steps, went through the bushes at the Champu salon, hit a neighbor’s Jeep, crossed the road, and crashed into that home.
Police had Carter at gunpoint until she got out of the car, and told them her “baby boy” was in the car!
Police found him crying with a bloody nose.
“Trying to outrun the police with a little kid in your car? Unforgivable,” the homeowner said.
The boy was taken to UPMC Children’s Hospital with minor injuries. Carter was taken to the hospital and was later arraigned and released on bond.
Police said she had a warrant out for her arrest and was driving on a suspended license.
The owner of the salon is glad this didn’t happen during the day.
“This whole side of the road is usually filled with cars,” said Jan Shank, owner of Champu. “Someone could have gotten hit by the car, it’s scary what could have happened, and didn’t.”
