A large gathering took a tragic turn when a young man was shot and killed on Mother’s Day. Around 5:30 on Sunday night, New Iberia Police received a call about a shooting that took place near a "birthday party," on the 1300 block of Jordan Street.

“They had kids playing on the front jump," said one eyewitness, "kids playing on the side like riding they bikes and stuff like that. Then everybody just scattered, after they heard the shots.”

KATC's Anna Fischer spoke with a neighbor who says her daughter was at the event, which she explained was a birthday party. For safety reasons, she wishes to remain anonymous.

“When they heard the shots, I guess she kinda ran in the street, and when she ran in the street, she jumped on top of him; that’s what kinda made me run in the road.”

The woman said her 19-year-old daughter was dating the victim at the time, who has now been identified as 21-year-old Daiquan Branch of New Iberia. KATC's Anna Fischer spoke with several eyewitnesses who say Branch was killed outside, in front of people during the party.

“...and when I grabbed her off him, I witnessed his face like tryna tell her something. And when he took his last breath like that she just—fell out. She was shocked! Nobody ever wanna witness somebody that’s close to them getting killed, especially right in front of them.”

Still processing the event herself, the neighbor said all she wants is for the violence to end. “Everybody just beefing behind word of mouth, or somebody that they family member is beefing with. I just want everything to stop.”

This is an active and ongoing investigation, as police have not yet made any arrests. To contact the New Iberia Police Department, click here .
