SC-22 routes narrowed to a few choices. It could displace scores of Horry residents

John and Katie Clairmont moved to their dream, log cabin-style home on 2 acres in Murrells Inlet six years ago. But that dream may vanish when the South Carolina Highway 22 Extension Project undergoes construction. The project, which has been in the works for nearly two decades , is in the public scoping stage where the initial 22 potential routes have been narrowed down to three. Two of which appear to run directly through the Clairmont’s home should they move forward. “I recognize the fact that Horry County is growing and needs infrastructure improvements. But that being said, they have to take into consideration the families that live in this area,” John Clairmont said. Formerly titled the Southern Evacuation Lifeline project (SELL), the highway intends to improve hurricane evacuation and traffic congestion while aiding services across the Waccamaw River. It’s currently slated to cost $1.56 billion for environmental mitigation and construction funded through Horry County’s RIDE 4 program . But the Clairmonts and other residents in the area are not convinced the project would serve the stated purpose and would increase traffic and development. All-way stop coming to NC 111 intersection

RICHLANDS — On Tuesday, Nov. 3, the intersection of NC 111 and Haw Branch Road was scheduled to be converted to an all-way stop. The intersection is just past the Duplin-Onslow County line in the Richlands area. According to a press release, the N.C. Department of Transportation installed new stop signs, flashers and pavement markings at the intersection, although the work is weather-dependent and could be rescheduled. “Over the last few years, NCDOT has implemented other mitigation strategies at this intersection including improvements to sight distance by clearing vegetation,” the press release stated. “Due to continued safety concerns, an all-way stop is warranted. NCDOT recommends an all-way stop only after a thorough evaluation of the intersection including analysis of traffic volumes, crash history, sight distance and a field investigation.“ According to NCDOT, an all-way stop is “a proven, cost-effective measure designed to enhance intersection safety and reduce the risk of serious crashes.” A 2023 NCDOT study showed that at nearly 350 rural intersections, all-way stop conversions reduce fatalities and serious injuries by 92%. Drivers should use caution when traveling near the area while the safety improvements are underway.
