Ohio's history stretches back centuries, and some of it is carved into the sandstone of southern Ohio. But exactly how old those carvings are remains a mystery to this day. The Leo Petroglyphs are a series of ancient rock carvings in southern Ohio that were likely created by people of the Fort Ancient culture, according to the Ohio History Connection . Their exact age, however, is unknown. Here's what to know about the centuries-old carvings and what historians know about their origins. Language: This food is the word Ohioans struggle to pronounce most The exact age of Ohio's Leo Petroglyphs remains a mystery The exact age of the petroglyphs isn't known. Based on the weathering of the sandstone, the Ohio History Connection says that the carvings are probably no more than 1,000 years old and were likely created by people of the Fort Ancient culture. The site contains 37 petroglyphs, or figures carved into a sandstone outcrop, depicting humans, birds, human and animal footprints, a fish, a snake and other figures.
