Cooper and Godsey roads slated for improvements

Cooper and Godsey Roads are the latest Butts County roads set to be resurfaced with help from supplemental funds from a Georgia Local Maintenance and Improvement Grant (LMIG). The Butts County Board of Commissioners approved a $981,892 bit from Blunt Construction as the vendor for these projects during its Monday, Oct. 26 meeting. Two-thirds of the project will be funded by LMIG and the remainder will come from capital funds. Butts County Public Works Director Joey Lowe said these projects will begin in late February or early March when the weather is more conducive. Lowe requested and received permission not to award the projects to the low bidder, MHB Paving, due to numerous issues with the company’s service on recent road improvement projects in the county. MHB Paving projects in Butts County were found to have the following problems: ♦ Pavement edges were not straight and were inconsistent throughout multiple sections. ♦ Finished pavement was uneven in multiple locations, and several areas exhibited poor workmanship and required additional attention. ♦ Gravel was not installed at numerous mailbox locations following paving operations. ♦ Several driveway aprons were not paved to the required two feet beyond the edge of the pavement. ♦

DOT warns of heavy Georgia traffic this weekend. See areas to avoid

Georgia drivers should prepare for heavier traffic this Halloween weekend, with the Georgia Department of Transportation warning that some trips could take up to 45 minutes longer than usual. The department expects heavy traffic on metro Atlanta interstates from noon to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30, and Saturday, Oct. 31, as people travel to Halloween events and other festivities, including the Georgia-Florida football game this year at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Drivers should plan for an additional 30 to 45 minutes of travel time during those periods, according to Georgia DOT's Halloween traffic forecast , which is based on historical traffic patterns. Afternoon congestion is also expected between 3 and 7 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday. Traffic is expected to be light statewide on Sunday, Nov. 1. Georgia DOT is urging motorists to plan their routes ahead of time and remain alert as more pedestrians are expected in neighborhoods for trick-or-treating.
