A private contractor removed a swath of trees from the former Autoport property in State College on Friday, but if and when the long-dormant site will be developed is still uncertain. The Centre County Tax Office is warning local residents of fraudulent phone calls falsely claiming tax bills are due. Scammers posing as representatives of the tax office are requesting credit card information over the phone to settle the supposed bills, according to a news release. "The Centre County Tax Office never requests payment or personal information over the phone," the Board of Commissioners Office wrote in a statement. "Residents should be vigilant and cautious if they receive such calls." Official communications from the tax office are typically sent by mail, not unsolicited phone calls. Anyone who receives a suspicious phone call of this nature should hang up immediately and report it to the Centre County Tax Office at (814) 355-6805 and local law enforcement.
