MULLENS — Becky Moorefield and Michelle Martin spent hours today hauling heavy bags of soil and fitting flowers into eight planters that will soon be strung up around town. Later, they’ll power wash the veteran’s memorial that sits behind the library as well as clean up the nearby coal miners memorial and possibly add a cluster of flowers.

Their work is on behalf of the beautification committee they both volunteer for, an arm of the City of Mullens Foundation — a local nonprofit dedicated to rebuilding and improving the town. Recently, the organization spearheaded the major renovations to the community pool in addition to repairing several parks.

Martin says the work of the foundation and its volunteers is important to the community, especially as the town continues to rebuild from the devastating flood that nearly wiped it out more than twenty years ago .

“We have seriously been rebuilding ever since then,” Moorefield said. “There’s still a lot of buildings that need to be torn down but a lot of them have been cleaned up.”

Along with adding flower beds and hanging planters, the committee has plans to string lights up on Main Street and downtown. The nonprofit also has several other projects in the works.

Between the support of the community and the foundation, they don’t need much. But they do need more hands.

    “Volunteers,” said Moorefield.

“Lots of volunteers please,” Martin added.
