SF's Great Highway fight may just be over

After six years, three ballot measures and a supervisor recall, San Francisco's fight over the Upper Great Highway and Sunset Dunes may finally be winding down. Why it matters: The dispute has become one of SF's most divisive battles over how to balance public space and neighborhood traffic. Driving the news: Voters this week overwhelmingly rejected Proposition G, which would've reopened the Upper Great Highway to vehicles on weekdays. Supporters of opening the highway haven't announced any renewed effort since the election. This SF Chronicle precinct map showcases the geographic divide in Prop G sentiment. Precincts directly along the Upper Great Highway voted no while pockets just inland voted yes. Support shifted back to no farther into the city. Catch up quick: What started as a pandemic-era street closure turned into a six-year political fight. 2020: San Francisco closed the Upper Great Highway to cars during the COVID-19 pandemic, giving residents space for socially distanced recreation. 2021–2022: The city restored weekday vehicle access. In November 2022, 65% of San Francisco voters rejected full vehicle access under Proposition I. 2024–2025: 55% of voters approved permanently converting the highway into a park under Prop. K , and Sunset Dunes opened in April

SF votes on public transit: Where the races stand

Voters in the Bay Area’s five most-populous counties are shaping the future of mass transit in the region in Tuesday's election. San Francisco voters cast ballots for propositions G and H. The former would re-open a two-mile stretch of Great Highway to vehicle traffic on weekdays , while the latter would create a parcel tax to fund Muni service . City residents also joined voters in Alameda, Contra Costa, Santa Clara and San Mateo counties in deciding whether or not to support a regional sales tax to fund public transportation, in the form of Proposition RTM . There is also a seat up for grabs on the BART board of directors. Here are where races stand as of 8:45 p.m. Tuesday night in preliminary tallies posted by the San Francisco Department of Elections, with 28.8% reporting. Proposition G For the third time, San Francisco voters are answering the question of whether or not to re-open a two-mile portion of what was formerly Great Highway to vehicular traffic. Proposition G qualified for the ballot this summer, after a petition collected more than 15,000 signatures, setting the Election Day stage for whether or not the area between Lincoln Way and Sloat Boulevard

Is SF's Lyft Bike Subscription Worth It?

In July, my sister visited and asked me to show her some of my favorite things to do in San Francisco. We own a couple of bikes, so I suggested we ride bikes through Golden Gate Park to Ocean Beach. She said she didn’t have the energy for a regular bike, but would ride an e-bike. I knew there were some Lyft e-bikes in our neighborhood, but believe it or not, I’d never actually tried them out (or even ridden an e-bike of any kind before) since I already have my own bike.
