Schools struggle for funding as more ballot items fail

School districts in Central Ohio and elsewhere across the state struggled to convince voters to approve new sources of funding in the recent election and now face difficult financial decisions. Why it matters: Districts are increasingly reliant on funding sources like property and income taxes — additional expenses that many financially strapped voters said were too much to bear this election. The latest: Of 134 statewide ballot issues tracked by the Ohio School Boards Association for the Nov. 3 ballot, just over half passed. Zoom in: Voters in a dozen Central Ohio districts faced levies or bonds, and only four were approved or are on track to pass. South-Western City Schools was the only successful issue in Franklin County — its bond issue didn't increase taxes and passed with 66% of the vote. Issues for Jefferson and Miami Trace lead by small margins, while the Delaware Area Career Center also passed. Threat level: Chillicothe, Mount Vernon, Pickerington and Southwest Licking have now experienced multiple failed issues in a row. Pickerington's board president says the district faces deep cuts. Southwest Licking's superintendent says cuts could be "catastrophic." Between the lines: Funding from ballot issues has become critical for districts amid reduced

Ohio high school football playoff win erased after unusual ineligible-player scheme

An unusual situation in Ohio has led to one high school football program having to forfeit its opening playoff win and the losing team getting another opportunity in the postseason. According to a report from Josh Weir of The Canton Repository — part of the USA TODAY Network — Liberty (Youngstown, OH) has been removed from the playoffs after the team used an ineligible player in the team's 26-16 opening round win over Canton Central Catholic. 19News received further information, learning that the disqualification stems from an ineligible player swapping jerseys with an eligible player and playing in the game. The report noted that Canton Central Catholic head coach Jeff Lindesmith was told that a fan of Liberty informed a Canton Central Catholic staff member of the swap. Liberty's athletic director Todd Smith was informed of the situation by that staff member shortly after. Smith later reported the situation to the OHSAA, leading to Liberty's disqualification. The Panthers entered the game with a 10-1 record and with the win, had advanced to a highly-anticipated second-round meeting with unbeaten Perry (OH). Now they'll have to look towards the 2027 season. Meanwhile, Canton Central Catholic (7-4) now gets a new life in

Mid-East students pursue CDA credentials through signing day

Early Childhood Education seniors at Mid-East Career and Technology Centers have committed to completing Child Development Associate training during Ohio’s first statewide Health and Human Services Signing Day, creating a pathway to nationally recognized early childhood education credentials, according to a community announcement. The signing event took place in early October in Zanesville. Students who complete the Child Development Associate, or CDA, program will work toward credentials that can support career advancement in a variety of early childhood education settings. The CDA training program prepares students to work with children from birth through age 5 and helps them develop skills sought by employers in the early childhood field, according to the announcement. “We are extremely proud of our Early Childhood Education students for taking this important first step toward a very meaningful and rewarding career,” said Katie Lucas, the Early Childhood Education instructor. “We know that when given the opportunity to become early childhood educators, our students will impact the lives of many young children, playing a pivotal role in facilitating learning and development during the formative years.” Students enrolled in Mid-East’s CDA program complete 120 hours of child development education coursework across eight content areas. The program also allows
