Small Wisconsin school district to dissolve after voters reject referendum

(The Center Square) – The Hustisford School District, in eastern Wisconsin, is going away. Wisconsin’s School District Boundary Appeal Board on voted to dissolve the district. It is the first time since 1990 board agreed to close a school district. Hustisford has just 238 students in the entire district and has been losing students for years. The school district asked voters for a $4 million referendum in April, but it failed. Quickly after the election, Hustisford Schools then began the process of shutting down. The vote was the final step. Wisconsin's state superintendent blamed a lack of money, and how the entire state of Wisconsin pays for schools for the shutdown. "The Hustisford School District is a casualty of decades of an antiquated, broken school funding formula that has failed to keep pace with the costs of educating our children," State Superintendent Dr. Jill Underly said in a statement. But Hustisford Schools were spending about the state's average per student. Budget numbers show Hustisford's budget was more than $6 million per year and show that the school spends about $22,000 per student. That's more than Wisconsin's state average of nearly $18,000 per student. Hustisford is in rural Dodge County, and

Manitowoc Lutheran falls to Kenosha St. Joseph | Level 3 playoff roundup

MANITOWOC — On the very first day of practice I talked with the Manitowoc Lutheran Lancers football team about how to prove last season’s historic run wasn’t a fluke, reaching Level 4 and the state semifinals for the first time in program history. This year, Manitowoc Lutheran fell 27-14 to Kenosha St. Joseph Catholic in a WIAA Division 6 Level 3 contest on Nov. 6 but the Lancers solidified themselves as a program. The seasons were led by almost an entirely different cast of players, so it wasn't like one or two players or a particularly strong class was the sole reason for success. Coach Ryan Hulse spoke with his team about all they accomplished, getting to host a Level 3 game in back-to-back seasons and also winning two straight Big East championships. The past two seasons the Lancers have gone 23-2 to show they’ll be a force to reckon with for years to come. “We have a lot to be proud of,” Hulse said. “Our defense played lights out this year. Just because you lose one game, doesn’t define your season.” Manitowoc Lutheran’s defense didn’t allow any points in nine games in 2026 and the 27 points scored by

Joel Nellis from Brookfield Central High School selected as Packers Coach of the Week

The Green Bay Packers have announced that Joel Nellis of Brookfield Central High School in Brookfield, Wis., has been named the Packers High School Coach of the Week. Nellis, in his eighth season as head coach at Brookfield Central, has the Lancers preparing for Level 3 of the WIAA Division 2 playoffs this week. They look to advance to the Level 4 state semifinals for the second time under Nellis' leadership. An up-and-down regular season, in which the Lancers faced one of the state's most challenging schedules, ended with a 3-6 record and a playoff berth as a No. 7 seed. Despite their regular-season record, the Lancers are playing their best when it matters most, defeating second-seeded Beaver Dam and No. 6 seed River Falls to earn a matchup with top-seeded New Richmond this week.

Football Sectional Final Preview: Division 6

Kenosha St. Joseph won a state title last year, but it came in Division 7, as the Lancers were elevated to D6 this year by the WIAA’s Tournament Performance Factor. That alone creates challenges, and last week the team got a tough test from a game Cuba City squad that comes out of the always-competitive SWAL. With the help of a huge multi-faceted performance from Christopher Kenesie, St. Joe’s won 28-21 in a game that was tied heading into the fourth quarter.
