While in Chicago for the American Public Transportation Association tradeshow, EXPO,bmy marketing and communications colleague and I thought it would be worthwhile to take a side trip to Milwaukee and check out their streetcar operation to get a behind-the-scenes look at it. We were primarily at the EXPO to transport home the scale model of our CAF Urbos 100 streetcar vehicle that CAF was displaying there, while also making new connections and cementing old connections with partners on our streetcar project.

Rock County drivers and businesses have endured a volatile six months at the pump, with gasoline prices rising and falling amid the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and disruptions to global energy supplies. The swings have kept fuel costs in the headlines for much of the year. High gasoline and diesel prices also became part of the broader cost-of-living debate during this week’s midterm elections, with candidates, political observers and voters pointing to fuel costs as one of the economic pressures facing households and businesses. As of this week, the average price for regular gasoline in the Janesville-Beloit area was about $4.17 per gallon, according to AAA. That was roughly $1.30 per gallon, or 45%, higher than a year earlier. Wisconsin’s statewide average was about $4.04. For a driver filling a 15-gallon tank, that year-over-year difference amounts to about $19.50 more per fill-up. The increase is even more pronounced for diesel, an important expense for trucking, construction, agriculture and other businesses. Janesville-Beloit diesel averaged about $6.25 per gallon this week, roughly $2.66, or 74%, higher than a year earlier. The local diesel average reached a record $6.72 per gallon on Sept. 22. Prices rise, fall and rise again The

For some Milwaukee County bus riders, a longer wait could become part of the daily commute. For others, the bigger concern is whether their bus route will even still exist. As federal pandemic relief funding runs dry and budget deficits grow, the Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTS) is considering service changes that could reduce its network by 25%.
A $218 million federal grant backs Hiawatha West, extending Amtrak's Chicago-Milwaukee trains toward Madison and adding about 278,000 riders a year.

Hales Corners residents, especially those on dead-end roads, can breathe a deep sigh of relief. On Oct. 5, Public Works Director Steven Houte told the Village Board a staffing shortage meant people should brace for a longer snowstorm response time this winter. Ten days later, a post on the village's Facebook account said the Public Works Department hired a new snowplow driver, ending any potential service delays. "Our team is now fully operational and ready for the winter season," the post read. The post struck an opposite tone than Houte did at the Oct. 5 meeting, when he told the Village Board whoever he hired would not be in a truck, clearing snow off roads this year. "Some things are going to have to slide down as a priority," Houte had said. "You might have to do those dead-end cleanups the following day instead of that day." So what changed? Houte told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel after appearing at a special budgetary meeting on Oct. 20 that he found someone with the same qualifications as the department's former snowplow driver, Mike Engel, who resigned in August. Both a driver and mechanic, Engel could do things like leave his plowing route
MILWAUKEE — Think you got away with passing a stopped school bus because there wasn’t a police officer around? You might want to think again. In Wisconsin, school bus drivers can report motorists who illegally pass their buses, and those reports can lead to citations. There’s another catch, too. The person who gets the ticket might not even be the one who was driving.
