Former Vol quarterback leads Concord Christian to first playoff win

Concord Christian School defeated Fayette Academy (Somerville, Tennessee), 49-21, Friday in the opening round of the TSSAA Division II-A playoffs at Bill Clabo Field in Farragut, Tennessee. The victory was the first postseason win in Concord Christian (8-3) program history. Former Tennessee quarterback Steve Matthews serves as the Lions' head coach. Concord Christian led Fayette Academy (6-5), 35-0, after the first quarter. The Lions scored on their first offensive play when freshman quarterback Dylan Brown completed an 80-yard touchdown pass to Dasani Moulden. "We knew they had a long trip from and we wanted to come out and score early," Matthews told Vols Wire. "We like to start fast, especially against a Wing-T team, try to get them in a hole to where it gets them in a hole, where it takes them out of what they like to do. "We wanted to get ahead of them because teams that run the Wing-T have a hard time catching up when they get behind." Brown completed 10-of-12 passing attempts for 289 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. Sophomore running back Maurice Smith totaled 114 rushing yards and two touchdowns on five attempts for the Lions. Concord Christian will play on Nov.

KCSO updates number of students charged in Farragut High School football hazing

The Knox County Sheriff's Office confirmed that 10 students have been charged after an Oct. 30 hazing at Farragut High School . In earlier reports, the department characterized it as "numerous" students. All the students were charged with misdemeanor assault. Two students were additionally charged with misdemeanor harassment. All were members of the football team. One of the students charged was a senior, and the rest were freshmen, KCSO spokesperson Justin Pratt said. The cases will be handled in juvenile court. The school resource officer, a KCSO deputy, handled the investigation. Pratt said the incident was the result of "teenage stupidity." A student's mother reported it to school officials on Nov. 2. Former Farragut football coach Geoff Courtney knew about the hazing , and he resigned Nov. 3. He said it did not influence his decision to resign. "After the football game, I was made aware of the situation that occurred, an incident that occurred at the end of the school day on Friday before the game," Courtney told Knox News on Nov. 4. "That report was sent from the guardian to myself, our athletic director, our principal, and our grade level principal. We sent that on to Knox County

Why former Tennessee Vols assistant Joe Osovet was fired from high school position

On Oct. 21, former Tennessee Volunteers tight end coach Joe Osovet was fired from his position as head coach of the Heritage High (TN) football team . The reason for that firing has now been released. Knox News reported Friday that Osovet was fired for not following concussion protocol during a road game against Carter (TN) on Sept. 25. An investigation into a report received by the Heritage administration found that Osovet "attempted to exert inappropriate influence upon assigned athletic trainers and upon a student-athlete to circumvent concussion protocol". A press release from Blount County Schools director Justin Ridge stated that the established concussion protocols are there to for the health and well-being of the athletes. Because of that, following the protocols is not optional. Ridge also noted that all decisions by athletic trainers and qualified medical personnel must be respected. "Established concussion protocols exist to protect the health and well-being of student-athletes, and adherence to these protocols is not optional," wrote Justin Ridge, Blount County Schools director, in a school release on Nov. 6. Check Knox County retention rates to see if teachers are staying at your school

Nearly 88% of Knox County Schools teachers stayed in the district for the 2024-25 school year, bouncing back from an eight-year record low in the 2023-24 school year, state data shows. Knox County is retaining its teachers at the same rate as Tennessee is, but that hasn't always been the case. Between 2019 and 2023, KCS consistently retained a lower percentage than the state average, according to data available from the Tennessee Department of Education since 2017-18. Data is not yet available for the 2025-26 school year, but is expected with the release of the state's annual report card this winter. Greene Devils roll past Fulton in first round playoff matchup

The Greene Devils continued their dominant ways Friday night, battling through some adversity and advancing to the second round of the Class 4A postseason with a 56-28 win over Fulton. “Anytime you can get a big win in the playoffs (it’s good). (Fulton is) really athletic, have a lot of speed, hats off to them, they played really well. We’ve not seen that speed all year,” said Greeneville head coach Eddie Spradlen. “We probably didn’t play our best half in the first half, but the kids responded and played really hard for four quarters, really proud of our effort.” Mr. Football semifinalist Taren Claridy turned in another explosive performance for the Greene Devils offensively. Claridy hauled in six passes for 211 yards and two touchdowns. However, Claridy left Burley Stadium wanting more out of himself and his team as they progress throughout the postseason. “I feel like we need to up our energy a lot next week if we want to go into round three,” he said. Quarterback Kaine Ricker made a claim for a Mr. Football semifinalist nod as well this season, and proved Friday why he should’ve joined Claridy in that honor. Ricker completed 12 of 14 passes

Cosby blasts Midway 48-8 for first-ever football playoff victory

COSBY — For the first 35 seasons of Cosby High School football, even when the Eagles found regular-season success, a playoff victory just wouldn’t come. Heading into this season, fourth-year head coach Levi Cooper and his team made it a stated goal to finally break through in the postseason. On Friday night, they did just that.
