Teen awarded 911 Hero Award for bravery

(MONUMENT, Colo.) — A teen from Monument was recognized by the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office (EPSO) for her efforts in saving her mother’s life.

According to EPSO, On Sept. 30, 2023, 13-year-old Gabriella Quattlebaum was cutting green chiles with her mother Trina Quattlebaum, when Trina passed out.

“Me and my mom were cutting green chiles and my mom passed out on the kitchen floor and she fainted and was out, and I dialed 911 and he told me exactly what to do,” said Gabriella.

EPSO said Gabriella was able to answer all of Dispatcher Andrew Roth’s questions.

“I’ve undergone three years of chemotherapy and radiation, and as we were peeling the green chile, I passed out unknowingly and woke up and Gabriella was already on the phone with the dispatcher,” said Trina.

Gabriella was initially very nervous and upset, but she was able to maintain her composure and followed dispatcher instructions to keep her mother’s airway open and count her breaths until the Monument Fire Department arrived.

On Thursday, May 9 Gabriella was presented with the “911 Hero Award” in recognition of her bravery at the Monument Fire Station 3.
