The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension has identified the six deputies involved in a shooting in Montrose that left a man hospitalized.

Matthew Lyrek, 38, was shot multiple times on the April 15 incident outside of a Dollar General at 631 Nelson Blvd . around 1 p.m. Lyrek allegedly brandished a gun and refused to comply with law enforcement.

He remains hospitalized at Hennepin County Medical Center as of Thursday in stable condition, according to the BCA.

Seven Wright County Sheriff's deputies used force, but one of them was working undercover at the time. The six who have been identified are:

  • Deputy Matthew Bilitz : Used "less-than-lethal" force, has six years of law enforcement experience
  • Deputy Heath Gilliham : Deployed his Taser, has 32 years of law enforcement experience
  • Deputy William Kenyon : Deployed his Taser, has 10 years of law enforcement experience
  • Deputy Andrew Lundeen : Fired his department rifle, has eight years of law enforcement experience
  • Deputy Jeff McMackins : Used "less-than-lethal" force, has 15 years of law enforcement experience
  • Deputy Jason Oltmanns : "Used less-than-lethal" force, has 16 years of law enforcement experience

A preliminary investigation states the deputies were looking to arrest Lyrek as he had multiple felony warrants at the time. When the deputies attempted to detain him outside of the Dollar General, Lyrek allegedly pulled out a handgun.

"Deputies deployed Tasers, less-than-lethal force and Lundeen fired his rifle at Lyrek," the BCA said.

Two handguns were found on Lyrek and additional guns were also located inside his vehicle.

"Wright County deputies do not wear body cameras but squad car cameras captured portions of the incident. BCA agents are reviewing all available video as part of the active investigation," the BCA said.

The Wright County Sheriff's Office asked the BCA to investigate the incident. Once the investigation is complete, the BCA will present its findings without a charging recommendation to the Wright County Attorney's Office for review.
