MONTICELLO — In support of “No Mow May,” the city has temporarily suspended its nuisance ordinance regarding the length of grass.

It’s the third consecutive year the Monticello City Council has approved the conservation initiative, which runs throughout the month of May, starting this past Wednesday, May 1, and going through Friday, May 31.

Normally, grass must be kept to a maximum height of 8 inches within 100 feet of a building.

During May, the city typically receives five to 10 grass length complaints. However, since its inception, the “No Mow May” program has led to a reduction in complaints as it gains recognition in the community.

The goal is to allow grass to grow unrestricted during the month, creating habitats for early-season pollinators, which play a critical role in our food supply and keeping our natural resources healthy.

Limiting the mowing of lawns in the spring increases pollen opportunity and provides the chance for bees to do their important pollination work.

Practical implementation for 2024 will include a public information campaign by the city to promote and inform residents and property owners of the program.

The Building Department will receive talking points to address concerns registered regarding grass length violations.

City parks will participate in the “No Mow May” event in passive areas. However, lawn and grass areas adjacent to rental structures and facilities will still be maintained in accordance with code requirements for usability purposes.

“No Mow May” is a minor sustainability initiative in alignment with the Monticello 2040 Plan’s Value Statements for a healthier and more beautiful community.

Enforcement of the grass rules will resume Saturday, June 1. At that time, all lawns cannot be over 8 inches.
