30 YEARS AGO:

APRIL 21, 1994

• A benefit was being planned for Ray Peterson of Monticello, who was injured in a February 1994 vehicle crash. He had been at North Memorial Hospital since the crash. A featured story detailed the hard work behind Peterson’s rehabilitation.

• The City Council was at a deadlock as it attempted to fill the council seat of Brad Fyle, who became mayor after a sudden mayoral resignation by Ken Maus. Dan Blonigan was brought forward as a candidate but was not appointed due to a 2-2 vote.

• David Sharp of the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission visited the IDC breakfast and shared samples of the ballot for the metro telephone question Monticello residents would soon vote on.

• Former Monticello resident William Schlegel was stabbed during a skirmish along Highway 25 near the cemetery north of Perkins Restaurant. Schlegel was stabbed by a juvenile who had been at the Monticello Roller Rink.

• A pop bottle bomb was found by a mail carrier in a mailbox along River Street.

15 YEARS AGO:

APRIL 25, 2009

• A 17-year-old boy from rural Monticello, Drew Anderson, was arrested April 16, and was facing criminal vehicular homicide charges after veering his car into oncoming traffic and killing an Otsego woman the week before. His blood alcohol level was 0.176 after drinking at an Easter party, according to authorities, and he was reportedly driving over 100 miles an hour when he crashed into the other car on County Road 19 in Albertville.

• More than 210 couples attended Monticello High School’s 2009 prom on Saturday, April 18. The theme was “A Knight for a Princess.”

• The Monticello Fire Department extinguished a 50-foot-by-50-foot-area grass fire at the Monticello Country Club Tuesday evening.

• On Monster Screen at Monticello Theater: “Fighting”
