Magic looking for team identity
The Monticello baseball team entered the season with high expectations. They started strong. The Magic won their first two games, scoring 27 runs on 14 hits. Confidence is key. Even though Monticello softball lost their first game of the season, they were as confident as can be. Monticello went on to beat Buffalo, Cambridge-Isanti and Becker back-to-back-to-back. Monticello Athlete of the Week: Alayna Opatz
Monticello High School sophomore Alayna Opatz of the girls’ golf team had herself quite the first week. During the Monticello Magic Girls Invite on Wednesday, April 10, Opatz was second out of over 100 golfers after shooting a personal best 79. She was one of two girls to shoot below 80 at the Monticello Country Club. Against Becker on Monday, Opatz shot an 83.
Knights open season with win in Monticello
Mother Nature was mostly kind on April 10 when the St. Michael-Albertville girls’ golf team opened the season in Monticello. Seventeen teams took to the course at the Monticello Country Club and the Knights were the cream of the crop. I errored in last week’s Bleat about Tessa Johnson, a freshman guard for South Carolina Gamecocks, when I had her scoring 10 when the correct number was 19 and I referred to her as a sophomore. STMA alum Tessa Johnson scores career-high in national championship win for South Carolina
It’s been a heck of a two years for 2023 St. Michael-Albertville High School graduate Tessa Johnson. Johnson, whose 2023 accolades look like a CVS receipt, just polished off another incredible season with the University of South Carolina. After going 29-3 and winning a state title with STMA in 2023, Johnson went 38-0 as a freshman with South Carolina and scored a career-high 19 points in the NCAA Women’s National Championship when SC beat Iowa 87-75. ...
Crimson hold down fort against Knights
After losing two straight to begin 2024, the Maple Grove baseball team had a chance to get back to .500 when the Crimson hosted St. Michael-Albertville on Monday. The Knights were searching for their first win of the season. Both teams scored a run in the first inning but after a scoreless second frame, the Crimson scored six runs over the next three innings to get back to an even 2-2 this year. Irish baseball starts season with losses
The Dassel-Cokato chargers claimed a three-run win over the Maple Lake Irish at Irish Stadium, Friday, April 12 in the home team’s first outing of the season. The Chargers started scoring with a single run in the first inning. They tacked on two more in the second before Maple Lake responded.
Royals softball remains undefeated with 11-4 win over Buffalo
The Rogers softball team used 15 hits, including home runs by Amanda Barnacle and Lauren Freeberg, to defeat visiting Buffalo 11-4 on April 12. The victory kept the Royals undefeated at 5-0 on the young season. Buffalo fell to 0-3. The Royals scored in every inning except the 5th, and led 8-0 before Buffalo scored 3 runs in the top of the sixth. Rogers answered with 3 runs in the bottom of the sixth to push the lead back to eight, and an 11-3 lead....
