30 YEARS AGO: APRIL 21, 1994

• Teacher Robin Balder competed in the women’s race of the Boston Marathon, finishing in 40th place.

• Mayor Ken Maus resigned and was replaced by Brad Fyle, who was elected by a 3-1 vote of the City Council.

• The physical therapy unit at the Monticello-Big Lake Hospital was set to become a private practice after a decision at a meeting of the hospital board.

• Voting was to begin on establishing the 295 telephone prefix in Monticello and making Monticello part of the metro telephone area.

• A grass fire at Lake Ida resulted in the loss of a garage. The fire started when the St. Paul owners of the property were burning leaves.

• Sunny Fresh Foods began a $2 million expansion at its Monticello plant.

• Maus Foods launched an outdoor seating area for its deli that had the feel of a French cafe.

• ADS: Maus Foods introduced half-gallons of Schroeder milk in returnable bottles made from Lexan resin.

• At the Monticello Theater: “White Fang 2,” “Cops & Robbersons,” “Bad Girls,” “Schindler’s List.”

15 YEARS AGO: APRIL 16, 2009

• Three seniors were severely burned in a Big Lake Township blast at the home of Laddy and Ruth Cusick.

• Wright County was getting prepared to launch an autism task force.

• The board of the Monticello-Big Lake Hospital voted to rename its medical/surgical unit in honor of Dr. Carl Samuel Osmundson, who had recently passed away.

• Ultra Machining Company (UMC) partnered with Anoka-Ramsey Community College in a cooperative program to enhance the job skills of UMC employees.

• The Monticello School District cut nine staff members due to budget cuts.

• On the Monster Screen at the Monticello Theater: “Hannah Montana.”
