UPDATED INFORMATION: Montclair Police Shooting

Montclair Police Shooting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens, II has announced that the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office is investigating a police-involved shooting in Montclair, NJ on April 15, 2024.

At approximately 1:09 p.m., Montclair Police officers were dispatched to a residence on the 100 block of Forest Street on reports of an armed person. As the officers approached the residence, they were met with gunfire.

One Montclair officer, Michael J. Medrano, age 33, was struck in the shoulder area. Another Montclair officer returned fire, striking the suspect. The wounded officer and the suspect were transported to University Hospital in Newark for treatment of non-life- threatening injuries. The injured officer has been released from the hospital.

The suspect, who has been identified as Maryann Swain, age 39, of Montclair has been charged with Aggravated Assault, Endangering the Welfare of a Child, Unlawful Possession of a Weapon and Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose. Swain remains hospitalized. Once released, she will be held in the Essex County Correctional Facility pending an appearance in Essex County Central Judicial Processing (CJP) Court.

The charges against the defendant are merely allegations. She is presumed innocent at this time. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Essex County Prosecutor’s tip line at 877- 847-7432.
