An investigation is underway in Montclair after a police officer was shot and injured Monday afternoon.

Police say there was an encounter between a woman and Montclair police officers on the 100 block of Forest Street.

"They just went in, I heard screaming, 'Gun!'- next thing you know I heard boom, boom, boom," said witness Sean Ruff.

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office says a woman fired a gun during the encounter, striking a police officer. Investigators say it appears that an officer returned fire, striking that woman as well.

"When I came down, I peeked through the window and I saw her taken out in cuffs but before that, I heard screaming and yelling around the back," said neighbor Anthony Yeller.

The officer and the woman were transported to University Hospital in Newark for treatment injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

Neighbors say there was also a child inside the home at the time of the incident.

"My friend took him into her house for a while to comfort the child, but then [the police] also took him down," said Ruff.

The New Jersey state PBA confirmed the officer's injuries are not life-threatening and are asking for prayers.

Attorney General Matt Platkin also took to social media saying his thoughts are with those affected by the shooting-- including the officer who is recovering.

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office is investigating. It's still unclear why police were initially called to the home.
