Joel Nellis from Brookfield Central High School selected as Packers Coach of the Week

The Green Bay Packers have announced that Joel Nellis of Brookfield Central High School in Brookfield, Wis., has been named the Packers High School Coach of the Week. Nellis, in his eighth season as head coach at Brookfield Central, has the Lancers preparing for Level 3 of the WIAA Division 2 playoffs this week. They look to advance to the Level 4 state semifinals for the second time under Nellis' leadership. An up-and-down regular season, in which the Lancers faced one of the state's most challenging schedules, ended with a 3-6 record and a playoff berth as a No. 7 seed. Despite their regular-season record, the Lancers are playing their best when it matters most, defeating second-seeded Beaver Dam and No. 6 seed River Falls to earn a matchup with top-seeded New Richmond this week.

Growing up, my dad always had an array of classic songs he would play for my brother and I from when he was our age. But out of all the oldies, there is one song that has always been engraved in my memory: “(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party!)” by the Beastie Boys. My dad showed us the music video and we quickly became obsessed, making the song a part of our daily routine. As I got older, I rarely listened to the song, and it just as easily became a distant childhood memory.

BEAVER DAM — Beaver Dam High School juniors and seniors put their civics education into practice by helping register voters during the 2026 midterm election. Before Election Day, the students completed training led by Dodge County Clerk Danielle Van Egtern and Chief Deputy County Clerk Melinda Garczynski. The training covered the requirements for registering voters and verifying proof of residence under Wisconsin election standards.

WIAA Football preview: Lake Mills gearing up for Level 3 clash against Delavan-Darien

LAKE MILLS — L-Cat Stadium has seen its share of big football games since opening late in the 2019 season. None of those games have had the magnitude of Friday’s clash for a state semifinal spot. Lake Mills’ top-seeded football team hosts third-seeded Delavan-Darien in a WIAA Division 4 Level 3 game at 7 p.m., seeking the program’s first-ever Level 4 berth. The L-Cats have been to the state semifinals once, back in 1987 when the postseason was four weeks instead of the current five-week format. Lake Mills’ senior-heavy team, 14 in total, will play its eighth playoff game in the past three seasons. That includes a 19-14 setback to Racine St. Catherine’s in Level 3 in 2024, a game which dropped the L-Cats’ third-round playoff record to 0-4 dating back to 2016. The L-Cats dispatched eighth-seeded Edgerton 42-22 in Level 1, then beat fifth-seeded Evansville 42-7 en route to pushing their streak of scoring 40 or more points to seven games. As a No. 1 seed for the first time in program history, the L-Cats earn the right to host a Level 3 game for the first time and will do it on a field where they are 34-7

Milton School District seeks Wall of Honor nominations

MILTON — Nominations are open for the Milton School District’s 2027 Wall of Honor. The Wall of Honor, which is in the high school commons, recognizes former students, alumni, staff and community members with close ties to the district who distinguished themselves through academic, artistic or athletic achievement. Milton School District Superintendent Jeremy Bilhorn and Milton School Communications and Safety Coordinator Kari Klebba co-chair a steering committee. From there, nominations forwarded to a nine-person selection committee made up of district staff, community members and alumni. “We want to celebrate those that have upgraded the culture and the foundations of the district that we love,” Bilhorn said. Nomination forms are at milton.k12.wi.us/WallOfHonor . Nominations are due Jan. 31 either online or in person at the high school. Selections will be made in March and announced in April. Honorees will be celebrated in a ceremony the Thursday of homecoming week and then presented at the homecoming football game. “It keeps going because there’s a lot of really good people.
