On Wednesday, Sept. 27, students from both Colton High School and Colton Middle School gathered at the flagpole on their campus to participate in the National See You at the Pole event. The annual prayer rally, held on the fourth September of each year, is a time when students across the nation gather to lift their schools, teachers, staff and country in prayer. An Oregon couple, now in their 90s, just celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary and continue to be madly in love. Gene and Virginia Nelson still playfully tease each other and enjoy sharing a laugh. The couple live in Canby, which is a small city around 30 minutes outside of Portland. They met over seven decades ago and decided to elope, which likely frustrated their parents. But despite that, they proved their love was a bond that would last forever. When asked about the key ingredients in the recipe for their long-lasting and happy marriage, 92-year-old Virginia told KGW 8, "We were just meant to be together!" "I don't know, how do you answer this question?" added Gene, 95. "Have patience through the good times and the bad, try to be honest and faithful."
Marion County names undersheriff
Marion County Sheriff’s Office announced Thursday that Cmdr. Jay Bergmann has been promoted to undersheriff, replacing Jeff Wood who is retiring in October. Bergmann’s responsibilities will include overseeing internal operations, such as community corrections, enforcement, institutions and operations divisions. He will also represent MCSO in some committees, work groups and local and state level boards. Bergmann began his law enforcement career at the Benton County Sheriff’s Office in 1999 as parole and probation deputy. He worked with the Lane County Sheriff’s Office briefly in 2003 before joining MCSO in 2004 as a deputy in the community corrections division. His experience includes supervising survival skills programs, serving on the SWAT squad and as a team leader for the tactical negotiations team. Bergmann was promoted to sergeant in 2008, lieutenant in 2015 and commander in 2022. Wood's retirement follows a 29-year law enforcement career.
