West of Whitefish U.S. 93 work continues with Spencer Hill, Lion Mountain entry impacts
Active construction continues between Livermore Flats and Mountainside Drive on U.S. Highway 93 west of Whitefish. Looking Back: Whitefish Parking Commission gives tourists a break
A look back at past Pilot articles by Julie Engler 50 Years Ago July 15, 1976 Nancy Hendricks, Ken Ross, Jim Heitel and Larrye Bellah, all alumni of Big Mountain, operated Que Pasa, a Mexican food restaurant on the East Lake Shore Road at the junction of Reservoir Road. Pulling their restaurant experience, the quartet hoped to provide a service-oriented restaurant that fulfilled the local need for an authentic Mexican house. All the partners had been exposed to Mexican food in its various forms and were trying to serve it in a “dining atmosphere that is comfortable with prices that are competitive with the average pocketbook and with the accent on service.” 40 Years Ago July 16, 1986 A zoning change allowing buildings in Whitefish over 35 feet high was forwarded to the Whitefish City Council by the City County Planning Board and Zoning Commission with hopes the council would use it. The Planning Board unanimously approved the zoning change guidelines but sent a message to the Council they would rather not see buildings over 35 feet tall in the city. The current ceiling of 35 feet would be altered in the general resort business district and industrial zone if

Temporary access changes on Upper, Lower Whitefish Roads
Construction crews contracted by The Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation will conduct important road repair and sediment reduction work on Upper Whitefish Road and Lower Whitefish Road in the Stillwater State Forest from July 15 – Sept. 30. Both motorized and non-motorized vehicle access, including bicycle travel, will be restricted in areas where construction is taking place. Crews will replace several culverts and upgrade road surfaces to improve instream habitat for Bull Trout and Westslope Cutthroat Trout. Heavy equipment will be active in the area, and some segments of the roads will not be passable during work periods. Crews will place signs at key locations to guide visitors and prevent entry into restricted areas during active work. Temporary road closures during construction will enhance safety for both the recreating public and the contractor. “The needed road maintenance is part of our ongoing commitment to caring for native trout and their habitat,” said Kari Nielsen, the state trust lands program manager for DNRC’s Northwestern Land Office. “This brief travel interruption now helps keep recreationists who enjoy the Stillwater State Forest safe, and we appreciate the public’s understanding as we complete this important work.” Visitors are urged to watch for

Summer highway projects slated near Ravalli and Polson
The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT), along with construction partner Riverside Contracting, Inc., will resurface Hwy. 93 south of Ravalli from July 9-15, weather and other unforeseen factors permitting. The project extends from north of White Coyote Road, at mile marker 20, to Holt Street, mile marker 26.7, and is part of a construction project that began during the fall of 2025. Crews will be working weekdays from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Work includes a rut fill, micro surfacing and applying new pavement markings. According to a press release from MDT, these improvements will create a smoother driving surface and extend the service life of the roadway. When traveling through the project corridor, motorists should expect single-lane traffic, traffic signals, pilot cars and delays up to one hour. Also in Lake County: MDT is re-striping U.S. 93 from the intersection of Caffrey Road to north of Regatta Road. Motorists should expect intermittent lane closures and slow-moving equipment during active work and should plan to follow all posted signage, watch for workers, and avoid driving on freshly striped lines.
