Mill closures ‘shock’ industry, but officials say demand for wood remains
Five days a week, a short train rolls out of the rail yard in Whitefish with empty freight cars destined for the Flathead Valley’s three surviving wood products mills in Columbia Falls and Evergreen. At one time, short trains like this could be found all over western Montana, serving mills in places like Libby, St. Regis, Darby and Pablo. But today, this is one of the few “local” freights left in the region.

High pressure remains in control today. This will lead to tranquil conditions, mostly clear skies and daytime highs in the 60s for many. Tonight, lows will cool into the 30s. The warming trend will continue Wednesday, even as we begin to see a transition to southwesterly flow. Afternoon temperatures will range from the mid-60s to low 70s. We will also begin to see an increase in moisture and cloud cover through the day. This could spark off a few showers and storms Wednesday for areas south of I-90.
