NBA insider gets honest about Anthony Edwards' confidence

There are a ton of things to like about Anthony Edwards, the breakout star of the NBA playoffs who somehow made the Minnesota Timberwolves cool again in their return to the Western Conference Finals.

But aside from his smooth scoring ability, dogged defense, and cocky charm, ESPN NBA insider Brian Windhorst appreciates something a little more subtle about the Ant Man: wearing a microphone for the broadcast.

That’s right, Windhorst believes there’s a connection between Edwards’ leadership and poise for Minnesota and his agreeing to be mic’d up for Game 7 in Denver. To Windhorst, Edwards choosing to wear the mic shows how confident he was heading into that moment and how genuine his trash talk and braggadocio really are .

“Obviously they want him to wear the microphone every game. And I think it’s kind of like an unwritten rule that the star player’s gotta wear the mic at least once in the playoffs, maybe they make you wear it once in the Finals if you get there,” Windhorst said in an interview on Pardon My Take released Wednesday. “The players don’t usually want to wear that and if they wear it, it’s usually early in the series. Ant’s like, ‘hell yeah, give it to me. Game 7 on the road, I’ll take that mic. Put it here.’

“I know that that sounds weird that I would focus on that, but that meant that before the game, he was like, ‘I’m not worried at all. Go ahead and record everything I say, go ahead and record my trash talk too while I’m at it.”

In a world where so many sports stars shy away from attention or fade from the spotlight in big moments, Edwards rose to the occasion. Not only that, he won the road Game 7 and chirped at the Nuggets and their fans while he did it.

“I was so impressed with him wearing the microphone, if I was in these draft meetings … I would start asking potential top picks, would you wear a microphone for a road Game 7,” Windhorst joked several minutes later when he came back to Edwards during a separate segment about Jayson Tatum in Boston.

Windhorst is one of the best there is in the NBA reporting game, but there’s a small chance he is reading a bit too much into this. Either that or he’s onto something genius.
