Mom's plane seat hack for toddler slammed as cruel and unfair to flight crew

A mom has sparked controversy after sharing her unique method of keeping her children seated during flights. Lisa Flom, a resident of Eden Prairie in Minneapolis, Minnesota, took to TikTok to share what she calls the "best airplane travel hack" with her 800,000 followers.

In a video, Lisa is seen attaching Velcro strips to an airplane seat and her child's clothing. This ensures that when the child sits down, they are securely fastened to the seat. The Velcro is strong enough to prevent the child from leaving their seat.

While some viewers hailed Lisa's trick as "simply genius", others criticized it as cruel, suggesting it would only lead to the child screaming in frustration. One user commented: "Dog kennel in the cargo area also works.", reports the Mirror . Another added: "Until five seconds later, my child would use their vocal cords to express their frustration".

One user questioned the legality of Lisa's method, while others expressed concern about the sticky residue left by the Velcro strips, which could potentially ruin the clothes of subsequent passengers. A user pointed out: "So after you pull it off the next passenger has to sit in the sticky tape residue? ".

Another user chimed in with a practical concern: "And do you pay the airline to get the residue off the seat or do you scrub them yourself? " Instead of relying on Velcro strips, some parents advocate for bringing car seats onto the plane, citing increased comfort and safety for their children. One parent shared their routine: "I take my car seat on every single trip. So easy. And my aunt is a retired flight attendant and have seen lots of babies injured during turbulence."

Echoing this sentiment, another parent stated: "Mum-of-four here. Kid would be safer in a car seat." The National Childbirth Trust (NCT) offers advice for those flying with infants, suggesting that passengers can request a bassinet or sky cot for their baby to sleep in during long-haul flights.

Their guidance notes: "You'll need to book a bulkhead seat (a row with no other seats in front) to get those though. Contact the airline as soon as you know you're traveling to see if you can reserve one." For those considering the use of a car seat on an aircraft, it's important to check with the airline beforehand, as policies vary between companies.
