Construction to close two runways at MSP this summer

Normal flight patterns at the Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport will be disrupted this summer as two runways will be closed for construction.

The busy Runway 12L-30R, also known as the North Parallel Runway, and the lesser-used Runway 4-22, also known as the Crosswind Runway, are both expected to be closed from early June until late September.

The last time these runaways were closed for this length of time was in 2009, according to the Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC).

The $24 million project is similar to a highway reconstruction and will include pavement excavation, laying new concrete, painting new marketings, installing lights and signs and more.

"This work is necessary to ensure critical airport infrastructure maintains the highest level of safety for handling aircraft operations and conforms to [Federal Aviation Administration] specifications," MAC shared.

Some residents living or working near the airport this summer may notice an uptick in overflights, while others will experience a decrease.

According to MAC, runway construction at MSP is expected to continue in 2025.

Runway 12R-30L, also known as the South Parallel Runway, is scheduled to be closed in April, May, September and October of 2025.
