Mineola celebrates May Fiesta
The May Fiesta, sponsored by the Mineola Area Chamber of Commerce, filled downtown Mineola Saturday with colorful sights and sounds from mariachi bands to revving engines. Among the events were two performances by Mineola’s own folklorico dancers, with music by Mariachi Real de Dallas and a Selena tribute by Luzy Tinajero. Children got to try their luck at pinata bashing while those brave enough took on the pepper-eating contest. A car show also graced much of N. Johnson St.

Funds needed for restoration of East Texas veterans memorial, vintage helicopter
HAWKINS, Texas — An effort to restore an East Texas veterans’ memorial featuring a vintage helicopter is taking off. Members of the nonprofit Greater Hawkins Veterans Memorial Association are making several upgrades to the memorial park at 500 Beulah St. that they hope to have completed by Memorial Day. They’re also hosting a golf tournament in early June to help pay for upgrades to the park.
