MINDEN, Iowa (WHO) — The tornado that struck Minden on April 26 damaged homes and businesses, and knocked over part of the American Legion Post. Now, there are two appeals for funds to help repair the building.

Post 437 had no insurance, and to repair the ceiling and wall damaged by the tornado, it will take approximately 50-60 thousand dollars. A GoFundMe page has been set up to raise the funds for the Legion.

“On April 26, an EF3 tornado decimated our small town of 600,” wrote James Handy on the GoFundMe page. “Many homes completely destroyed, many others severely damaged, with nearly half of our town affected including many businesses that are vital to the livelihood of a small town. The Minden American Legion Post was included in this destruction, with heavy damage to the building causing wall and ceiling collapse.”

Dean Olson, Commander of the Legion Post 437 said they have been talking to a contractor who can repair the fallen wall.

“We’re very fortunate because we have a man who is a veteran that is very well known for his ability,” said Olson. “He’s going to take and reinforce this wall all the way down. It’ll be better than it was before.”

“The Minden Legion is a long-standing post that is ran by proud veterans who have served our country stateside and abroad,” wrote Handy. “We have veterans spanning several foreign wars and all advocate patriotism and honor, promoting strong national security, and continued devotion to our fellow service members and veterans.”

The building is also used for community meetings, 4-H, and other youth activities. The Legion sponsors suppers and people can eat with a free-will offering.

The Legion Post has appreciated all who have given to help Minden.

“A good part of it is it brings out the side of people that you don’t see every day,” said Olson. “Now they’re down to reality and the little things they realize were not a problem at all.”

People wanting to contribute to rebuilding the Legion Hall can find GoFundMe page here . Checks can also be sent to the Minden Legion directly. Their address is 211 Broadway St. Minden, Iowa 51553.
