State police are investigating an armed carjacking at a rest area on Interstate 95 in Milford on Wednesday morning and two attempted carjackings at nearby rest areas.

The incident in Milford was reported at 5:38 a.m. when troopers responded to the I-95 North rest area, according to Connecticut State Police .

State police said a woman parked her Acura RDX in the parking lot and was approached by an individual wearing dark clothing and a mask as she exited her vehicle. The individual allegedly showed a firearm and demanded the woman’s keys and belongings.

The woman complied and then noticed two additional masked individuals approach, according to state police. At least one of the robbers left the area in the stolen Acura.

When troopers arrived, they found an unoccupied Kia Forte parked nearby with its engine running. The Kia was found to have been stolen in Hamden, state police said.

Just before 7:30 a.m., troopers from Troop G learned that the stolen Acura was involved in a crash in Hamden, where the occupants reportedly fled on foot before getting into a Hyundai SUV and leaving the area.

State police said they seized the Acura and Kia as evidence.

Earlier in the morning, troopers responded to two reports of attempted carjackings at rest areas along I-95. The first was reported at 4:27 a.m. in Darien, where a man parked his Audi and noticed an older model white sedan pull behind his vehicle as he got out and was about to enter the rest stop, according to state police. The Audi driver had a female passenger who remained in the vehicle.

The man alleged that two young males got out of the sedan and approached him, with one of them grabbing him and trying to pull him away from the Audi, according to state police. The man told troopers he punched the male in the face, prompting him to back away, which allowed the victim to get back into the Audi.

One of the males then allegedly tried to open the driver-side door of the Audi, while the second individual tried pulling the female passenger out of the vehicle, according to state police. The female was able to pull the door closed before the driver was able to close his door, at which point both attempted carjackers allegedly retreated to the sedan they arrived in and left the area.

State police said no weapons were involved in the attempted carjacking.

At 5:27 a.m., troopers from Troop G received a 911 call reporting an attempted armed carjacking at the rest area off of I-95 South in Milford. The victim said he was fueling his vehicle when a masked individual allegedly approached him and displayed a firearm, according to state police.

The victim told state police he sprayed the masked individual with gasoline before he fled to a black sedan nearby.

“The three incidents remain under investigation by detectives from the Connecticut State Police Western District Major Crime Squad,” state police wrote in a statement Wednesday afternoon.

“All of the facts and circumstances surrounding these incidents remain under investigation and this is all the information available for release at this time,” troopers continued.

Any witnesses or motorists in the area with dash-cam footage have been asked to contact Det. Caroline Hanson at Caroline.Hanson@ct.gov . All information will remain confidential.
