St. John’s (Shrewsbury) football cruises past Brockton in MIAA playoffs

SHREWSBURY -- There wasn't a better time or place for Aiden Dagnello to rumble into the end zone for his first career touchdown as a member of the St. John's Shrewsbury football team. The Pioneers put together a scoring party in the first round of the MIAA Division 1 state tournament, taking down Brockton 58-18 on Thursday, Nov. 5. St. John’s spoiled the playoff debut of first-year Brockton head coach Mike Norman Jr. despite a strong start that saw Brockton take an early lead in the first quarter. “We came out and threw the first punch, but we have to continue to ride that high and we haven’t done that,” said Norman Jr. “When you can’t, results like this happen." On the other side, Dagnello didn't just take part in the scoring party on Thursday. He was the life of it. St. John's (Shrewsbury) led Brockton 17-6 with just over seven minutes remaining in the second quarter when the 6-2, 295-pound defensive lineman tipped a pass from Brockton senior quarterback Marcio Semedo and tracked it in the air at the Boxer 40-yard line for an interception return touchdown. “I almost had one last week, but I dropped it,” Dagnello said.

Aedan Borges wills Case football to upset over champ Fairhaven in MIAA playoffs

FAIRHAVEN — After losing a thriller at Alumni Field last month, first-year head coach Mike Cloutier and the No. 11 Joseph Case football team wanted another shot against defending Division 6 Super Bowl champion Fairhaven. What transpired in Thursday's Division 6 Round of 16 playoff game was nearly a replica of the first contest as both teams went blow for blow. This time it was the Cardinals who managed to pull out an upset win over the Blue Devils. Aedan Borges scored six touchdowns, including the eventual game-winner on a fumble recovery for a score midway through the fourth quarter to lift Case to an incredible 42-37 victory over No. 6 Fairhaven. Watch MA high school football on NFHS With the win, the Cardinals (7-2) move on the Elite 8 for the first time in school history and snapped the Blue Devils' 15-game unbeaten win streak that dated back to last season. Case won its first playoff game since 1992, snapping a 34-year drought. "I could not be more proud of this team, Borges and the fight from everybody," Cloutier said. "We could have caved early but we stayed in the fight. I've never been so pumped up after a

Franklin High football's MIAA playoff hopes dashed by Andover

The Franklin football team found itself in a spot it's in every year on Thursday night, November 5. The Panthers were back in the MIAA Division 1 state playoffs, a trip they have made each full season since 2019. Yet, for the fourth straight fall, the Panthers couldn't get over the first-round hump, as the eighth-seeded Panthers couldn't hold off hard-charging No. 9-seed Andover in a 56-21 victory for the visitors. It marked the third time since 2019 that Andover had defeated Franklin in the postseason. More: MetroWest high school football schedule/live scores (Nov. 5-7) Among the bright spots for the host Panthers (6-3) was sophomore quarterback Ethan Edmunds, who was 34-for-51 passing for 270 yards and three touchdowns in addition to 68 yards rushing. Additionally, Ben Scullin had eight catches for 65 yards and two TDs for Franklin, while Iyad Fraifer had nine catches for 102 yards and a TD. Christian Holmes added 13 catches for 86 yards for the Panthers. For Andover, senior Marcus DeJesus ran for four touchdowns and caught another in the convincing victory.
