Former Miami Marlins outfielder Monte Harrison changing career path, commits to play SEC football at Arkansas

Former Miami Marlins outfielder Monte Harrison didn’t have the professional baseball career that most hoped that he would. But shockingly, he has now decided to reverse could and embark on a career in an entirely different sport.

Harrison, who was once regarded as one of the top prospects in baseball in the Marlin farm system, struggled to live up to his potential in the MLB. He played in the MLB for just three seasons, failing to hit over the Mendoza line (.200 batting average) in any year at the major league level.

He last played professional baseball in 2023 for the Nashville Sounds, the Triple-A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers, where he again struggled with a .208 batting average on the year.

At the age of 28, most would assume that Harrison would either call it quits on his professional sports dream or at least continue to try and battle through the minor leagues in hopes that one day he could potentially earn a shot again in the MLB.

But instead, Harrison has decided to return back to school, officially committing to play for the Arkansas Razorbacks to play college football, according to On3 Sports . This is allowed because Harrison was drafted out of high school, so he has yet to use up any of his collegiate eligibility.

Harrison does have a pretty extensive high school background as a football player, once ranked as the fifth-best high school prospect out of the state of Missouri in the 2014 high school recruiting class via the On3 Sports recruiting rankings.

In order to reach the highest level of the MLB, you certainly have to be a supreme athlete, even in Harrison’s case despite not sticking at the MLB level. So he certainly has the raw tools to contribute for Arkansas if he is given the opportunity to do so.

It will sure be interesting to see how Harrison can contribute for Arkansas against some of the most fierce competition in the country in the SEC.
