Plantation (Fla.) American Heritage four-star receiver Malachi Toney has continued to visit other programs, but several factors have kept him committed to Miami .

The No. 156 overall prospect in the On3 Industry Ranking, No. 22 receiver in the 2026 class and No. 29 recruit in the state of Florida took visits to Auburn, Florida State and Syracuse this spring in addition to Miami, although his loyalty to the Hurricanes hasn’t wavered since a commitment last fall that took most by surprise (including Miami’s coaching staff). Toney has grown increasingly close to receivers coach Kevin Beard through last fall and this spring, who he said has been a major reason why he’s remained committed to the Hurricanes.

Miami offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson also dropped by Toney’s school Friday to check up on him, 2026 top-15 quarterback Dia Bell , 2025 four-star running back Byron Louis and fellow 2026 four-star receiver Brandon Bennett , among others. Louisville and Oregon have also caught Toney’s attention, but he’s remained tight with the Hurricanes.

“The young guys playing (at Miami) really stood out the most to me (on my visit),” Toney said. “Just to be given the opportunity. Then Miami’s my hometown. When I was younger I used to watch them. Then coach KB (Kevin Beard), he’s a cool guy, he keeps it real with you. He always keeps it real with you, even when he was over at Toledo.”

Toney said he’s had a few light conversations with Bell about potentially playing together in college and is excited about the talent Miami already has committed in the 2025 and 2026 classes. He’s continued to believe the Hurricanes are trending in the right direction and are poised to take a step forward this season, although he believes the coaching, player development and relationships being built at the other schools previously mentioned have kept them in the mix as well.

“It’s definitely the relationships they’ve built with me,” Toney said. “Even though they can’t talk to me too much (as a 2026 recruit), I like how their programs are being built up.”

Toney said he doesn’t plan to attend any prospect camps this summer, although he attended a massive South Florida 7-on-7 tournament in Coral Gables with his high school team last June.

    CaneSport’s Take

Toney was a big get for the Hurricanes, and Miami obviously has its sights set on Bell, his teammate, as well. The idea of linking up at the college level is mildly attractive to Bell, he previously told CaneSport, although it isn’t expected to play a massive role in his decision later this summer. Toney, meanwhile, likely isn’t going anywhere any time soon.
