MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A mom is being charged with reckless endangerment after police say her three-year-old son shot himself at their home Sunday.

Antwoneshia Thomas, 31, was given a $40,000 bond.

According to reports, Thomas removed her husband’s gun from their car to her purse to put it away in their home. When she made it there, she put her purse on the couch and went into the kitchen.

That’s when the toddler found the gun and reportedly shot himself. He is currently in critical condition at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital.

WREG spoke to her neighbors who told us they are shocked because they believe Thomas is a good mother.

“She takes them to school every morning, and she picks them up,” said Regina Sesse, who has been Thomas’ neighbor for six months.

Sesse says their kids also play together all the time.

“She’s a good neighbor. She loves her kids, and she is always watching them. She never leaves the little babies outside,” Sesse said.

But now, the three-year-old will be missing a few play dates.

“He’s just a fun little happy baby,” said Sesse. “To me, it’s just like a freaking accident.”

Thomas is now being charged for that mistake. In court Monday, she was appointed a public defender.

At this time, she says she will not be able to pay her bond.
