Bloomington drivers to face weekslong lane restriction

Drivers in downtown Bloomington will encounter a new lane restriction starting Wednesday, Oct. 21. Here’s what you need to know. Where in downtown is the lane restriction? The city will close the eastbound lane on Second Street, from South Walker Street in the west to College Avenue in the east. The westbound lane will remain open. How long will the lane be closed? The lane will be closed starting Oct. 21 for up to 45 days, though city officials expect the closure to be lifted by Thanksgiving. Why is the lane being closed? The lane is being closed because of ongoing construction work related to the former hospital site, which the city is turning into a new neighborhood, called Hopewell. The city said in a news release that the closure will allow crews to replace asphalt and install new stormwater infrastructure, among other things. What else is the city doing on Second Street? The city is installing a two-way protected bike lane along the north side of Second Street, from Walker to the B-Line Trail, and also will replace traffic signals at the intersections of Second Street with Walker and Rogers Street.
