Newberg track and field's Sophia Castaneda named OSAA athlete of the week
Newberg track and field sophomore standout Sophia Castaneda was one of the four athletes awarded athlete of the week for April 22-28 by the OSAA. Castaneda ran the 400 meters in 54.96 seconds on April 24 at a Pacific Conference meet against Forest Grove and McMinnville. The time re-broke Castaneda's previous school record and slated her with the second-fastest time in the state this season, regardless of classification. Next mural project underway in Newberg
The effort by a local Rotary club and George Fox University to site colorful murals throughout the town is continuing. The latest project is underway on the west-facing corner of Ixtapa Restaurant on First and Blaine streets and is titled “Flowing Connection.” A cadre of GFU students began the project in late April after local contractor JK Paint prepared and primed the wall for paint, creating a clean white canvas for the 60-foot-by-15-foot art piece. ...

In the interest of creating or retaining jobs, generating increased economic activity and improving the social and economic livability of communities within its boundaries, Yamhill County will continue a program in May that has $125,000 in available grants. Woodburn celebrates Cinco de Mayo
With May 5 turning up on a Sunday this year, the 16th annual Cinco de Mayo celebration in Woodburn kicked things off on Friday, May 3, making way for a three-day celebration. Woodburn High School Mariachi band warmed things up at the Chemeketa Woodburn annex, where multiple civic and educational leaders addressed a healthy turnout that consisted largely of are k-12 students.
