Yamhill Valley Vineyards 2022 Estate Pinot Blanc, McMinnville $30
The Burger family and winemaker Ariel Eberle celebrated the 40th anniversary of their 150-acre vineyard during 2023, and they continue to be among the few in the Willamette Valley to champion this too-often overlooked and unappreciated Burgundy variety. Eberle gets to work with blocks planted during the second decade of the vineyard — 1994 and 1999 — and while most of these two lots were fermented in stainless steel, three neutral barrels were used, as well as a once-filled puncheon. The diverse approaches in the cellar build fascinating aromas of fennel pollen, blanched almond and flannel behind the yellow fruit notes. Inside, it’s fruit-forward as nectarine and apricot lead the way, followed by secondary notes of flint and a finish of lemon and starfruit.

Forget Presents. This Year, Spoil Yourself and Your Bestie.
This season’s gifting is about experiences. After years of being cooped up, people want to feel the crunch of snow under their snowshoes, hear the evening surf, and taste damn delicious food. There’s some science behind this: studies have long shown that people derive more happiness from experiences than from material purchases, which is largely because the actual doing of things leads to more conversations and relationship-building, not to mention charmed memories. We’re nothing if not data nerds, and so our gift guide curates the best activities that you should do with your favorite humans, from hour-long classes to multiday adventures. Imagine: You say, “Hey, I bought us a snowshoeing tour! When would you like me to book it?” Your bestie grins ear to ear. You feel the warm glow of friend-love. A local business gets support. Newberg Wine: An Introduction to Red Wine
In the 1960s, the first wine pioneers planted Pinot Noir grapes in the Willamette Valley, recognizing that it has abundant similarities to France’s Burgundy (the legendary growing region of French Pinot Noir). In 1980, that first winemaker, David Lett of the Eyrie Vineyards, brought his Oregon Pinot to the “wine olympics” in Paris, and won second place over many famous French wines. That competition put the Willamette Valley on the global wine map, and kicked off a thriving industry which you can experience today. Twelve distinct AVAs (American Viticulture Areas) comprise the Willamette Valley wine region, which is now home to about 700 winery tasting rooms – most producing Pinot Noir.
