Between Tampa And Gainesville Is An Archaeological Park With Native American History, Fishing, And Trails

Florida's Gulf Coast is a prime, year-round vacation escape, but its tourism hotspots tend to center on its prominent Gulf-side beaches. Inland from the Gulf, however, sits a worthy collection of outdoor attractions preserving Florida's natural, cultural, and historical treasures without any beaches involved. A superb Florida hidden gem for history and nature lovers alike is the small but extraordinary Crystal River Archaeological State Park. With the word "archaeological" in its name, you can probably guess that this park is a bit more history-minded than most Florida state parks. At the same time, this park is far from a stuffy history lecture, and you'll find top-tier inland water recreation along with its historic treasures.

Bagel Bakery owner says payment problems persist at City Food Hall

The owner of The Bagel Bakery in Gainesville says City Food Hall owes him about $4,000 in unpaid revenue, raising concerns about the midtown food hall's payment practices and whether other vendors are experiencing similar problems. Jason Cole, owner of The Bagel Bakery, told The Sun in an Oct. 27 phone interview that he had not received a payment since Oct. 5 and said he was aware of other businesses at the food hall experiencing similar issues. Cole also owns The Bagel Bakery at 4113 NW 16th Blvd. Cole, who opened a location at the food hall in August, said his business entered into an agreement with City Food Hall that required vendors to use a shared payment system. He said the food hall is operated by founder and CEO Peter Rounce and occupies space on the bottom floor of The Standard, 1360 W. University Ave. Under the arrangement, Cole said sales revenue from vendors went into a central account before businesses were paid their weekly sales, minus agreed-upon fees. Cole said 18% was deducted from sales, including a 15% fee for City Food Hall and another 3% to support employees working in common areas, such as janitorial staff. While

Florida state parks unveil new manatee experiences

The beloved manatee is a Florida icon, and several of our state’s award-winning state parks provide both critical habitat for manatees and educational experiences and programs to help park visitors create connections with these gentle giants. November is Manatee Awareness Month — Former Gov. Bob Graham first made the designation in 1979 — and the Florida State Parks Foundation celebrated the occasion by announcing a new wave of manatee-related resources for four state parks, all of which are no more than a day trip from Tallahassee. The Jacksonville-based Delores Barr Weaver Legacy Funds, a longtime partner of the Foundation, donated $250,000 to help bring these new resources to fruition. “Mrs. Weaver made an incredible investment in Florida’s state parks and manatees,” Florida State Parks Foundation CEO Julia Gill Woodward said. “We are thrilled to see that these projects have come to fruition through her generosity.” Want to check out the new features and experience Florida’s manatees this month? Start down the road in Levy County, where Manatee Springs and Fanning Springs state parks have each received new signage to inform visitors about Florida’s manatees and how to best share our state’s waterways with them.
