St. Augustine Road railroad crossing to close for repairs
VALDOSTA – Valdosta motorists are being cautioned to be aware of detour routes on St. Augustine Road due to the railroad crossing closure for repairs. On Wednesday, June 14, 2023, Southern Commercial Development, LLC and CSX Transportation will close St. Augustine Road (Off Hwy 84, near W. Savannah Ave). This section of St. Augustine Road will remain closed until Friday, June 16, 2023, or until the work has been completed. Signage and traffic control devices will be in place, marking detour routes to inform motorists about the direction of travel when approaching the work zone. As always, motorists are urged to drive with caution and follow the traffic control devices set in place.

VFD to host Car Seat Safety Check event
VALDOSTA – The Valdosta Fire Department will host a Car Seat Safety Check event to help educate the public on proper car seat installation. The Valdosta Fire Department will host a Car Seat Safety Check event on Monday, June 12, 2023, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Mathis Auditorium. VFD is partnering with the South Georgia Trauma Team (made up of VFD and South Georgia Medical Department of Trauma), Lowndes County Safe Kids, Valdosta Police Department, and Lowndes County Georgia Family Connection, and Department of Public Health to educate the public on proper car seat installation. Residents can drive through the check stations and receive one-on-one demonstrations from certified car seat technicians.

On June 1st, Corteva Agriscience, located on Rocky Ford Road, donated two quick response hazardous materials decontamination showers to Lowndes County Fire Rescue. Through the joint efforts of Captain Bennie Kennedy of Lowndes County Fire Rescue and Jamieo Carter with Corteva’s Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S), Corteva provided these showers, which cost several thousand dollars each, at no cost to Lowndes County.
