Utility work to close part of Detroit Avenue in South Toledo
Detroit Avenue’s northbound lane will be closed in part of South Toledo for a utility project starting Wednesday, the Toledo Department of Transportation said. For “the first few days” the northbound lane will be closed around the clock between Sherwood Avenue and Wildwood Road, but thereafter it will reopen at nights and on weekends, city officials said. A posted detour will use Sherwood to the Anthony Wayne Trail and Glendale Avenue. Detroit’s southbound lane will remain open. Separately, Heatherdowns Boulevard will be closed Wednesday only for tree work between Birchwood and Tarkington avenues, with no detour posted, the city announced.

Editorial: Toledo railroad infrastructure gains
Spending federal funds to upgrade an aging railroad bridge across the Maumee River was a wise investment in local infrastructure. Letting the Toledo Belt Bridge deteriorate any further would have necessitated removing it, and with it would have gone an important part of the logistical puzzle that contributes to Toledo’s industrial and transportation economy. Motorists on Summit Street between downtown Toledo and Point Place are familiar with the bridge if they look east near New York Avenue in the North End. U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D., Toledo) and U.S. Sen. Jon Husted (R., Ohio) shared the honor of announcing the planned $43.5 million upgrade to the old bridge. It’s known locally as the Toledo Belt Bridge, and officially as the Toledo Swing Bridge. Also, as the Toledo Pivot Bridge. The “swing” and “pivot” refer to what the bridge does when a train needs to cross. Otherwise, it is kept open so ships can sail through. The current owner is Wheeling and Lake Erie Railway, having acquired it from Norfolk Southern for a mere $1 more than 20 years ago. Wheeling says there is freight that it can handle if the 1897 bridge is strengthened to handle freight cars weighing up

Road Warrior: Traffic changes planned at Rossford roundabout site
A traffic-pattern shift is planned for Tuesday at the Glenwood/Buck roundabout project in Rossford. Glenwood Road will be entirely closed on the north side of Buck Road during this phase, which will allow Glenwood to be shifted to its tie-in with the new, circular intersection. The city of Rossford expects westbound Buck to reopen approaching Glenwood, where it has been closed for reconstruction. As of Saturday, a stretch of pavement in that part of Buck remained to be built, so that will have to happen before the westbound lane can reopen. The city said the work on Glenwood’s northerly leg is expected to take about 10 days but is weather dependent. Once this switch occurs, northbound traffic on Glenwood approaching Buck will no longer have a forced right turn onto eastbound Buck. That will be welcome relief for motorists not anticipating that turn, because the detour it begins is quite long. Some drivers appear to have been cutting through the parking lot at the Wendy’s on the intersection’s southwest corner, so that should come to an end too. **** Utility work will close eastbound South Avenue between Cordova Street and Maumee Avenue on Monday only, the Toledo Department of Transportation
