McDowell sets team records, then walks off Altoona in PIAA playoff game

When Chase Carrick took the handoff, he saw the gap. Seconds later, he was running toward his bench to celebrate with his teammates. Carrick scored on a 10-yard run in double overtime as McDowell outlasted Altoona 47-41 in a PIAA Class 6A subregional football game on Friday, Nov. 6, at James Conner Field. “I just wanted to get some yards after they didn’t score,” said Carrick. “When I saw the gap opened up I knew I was gone. I wasn’t going to mess it up.” McDowell (8-3) moves on to another PIAA subregional next week at State College after the Little Lions beat Erie High 55-0. DuBois Junior High Finishes Season Unbeaten by Besting Hollidaysburg 42-16

The DuBois Beaver Junior High put the finishing touches on an unbeaten season by dismantling a good Hollidaysburg team 42-16 Wednesday afternoon at Mansell Stadium in DuBois. The DuBois 7th/8th grade team ended the season with a 9-0 mark. Beaver Quarterback Landon Liddle was a key factor in the victory with 260 total offensive yards. He was involved in three scores as he passed for a pair of TDs and caught a touchdown pass. He also claimed two interceptions on defense.

Henderson Gymnasium became a haunted house on Sunday night for Shippensburg University students for the annual Haunted Henderson event. This year's theme was a haunted hospital. Students were taken into a dark corridor filled with severed limbs, nurses and sudden scares. A girl with various doll parts cried for friends as attendees walked past, and the scares ended with a clown jumping out from a bin.

Playoffs Begin for Centre County High School Football Teams

It’s playoff time, and all five of the Centre County high school teams qualified for the 2026 District 6 tournament. Penns Valley, Bald Eagle Area and Philipsburg-Osceola all came through with Week 10 wins to secure positions, while undefeated State College and 5-5 Bellefonte earned the No. 1 seeds in the 6A and 4A divisions. Here is what the first games look like: Erie Area (2-7) at State College (10-0) D6-8-10 regional semifinal Friday, Nov. 6, 7 p.m. Memorial Field The State College Little Lions will begin the 2026 6A playoffs with a home game against District 10’s Erie Area in a regional . Proposed 2027 State College Budget Includes Real Estate Tax Increase

State College Borough is poised to raise its property tax for a third consecutive year. The borough's proposed 2027 budget includes a three-mill tax increase, a 12% hike that would bring State College's total millage to 27.88 mills. The tax increase, which is one mill more than that implemented for 2026, is part of a $72.2 million fiscal plan presented on Friday afternoon as Borough Council began its weeks-long budget review. For a home with a present-day market value of $300,000 and no homestead exclusion, the increase would equal $147.54 for the year, while with the exclusion it would be $72.54. For a property with a $500,000 market without the homestead exclusion it would mean an additional $245.90, or $170.90 with the homestead exclusion. The increase would generate $1,821,063 in new recurring revenue for a borough budget that remains structurally unbalanced for the seventh consecutive year. The total proposed budget includes $72,249,482 in expenditures — which is only $12,742 more than the approved 2026 budget — with revenue of $62,357,539, about $1.8 million more than 2026. Penn State School of Music to Host Two Family-Friendly Performances in November

Children and families will have two opportunities to experience live music and theater at Penn State this month through a free opera and an interactive concert inspired by Pennsylvania folklore. The university's School of Music will present "Dragon's Breath" at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 8, at the Recital Hall in the Music Building on the University Park campus. Admission is free, and families can join lobby activities starting at 12:45 p.m. The second performance, "Critters, Creatures, and Tall Tales: A Hero's Journey," is scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19, also in the Recital Hall. Tickets are $16.50 for adults and $9 for students and are available through Penn State's Arts Ticket Center . "Dragon's Breath" is a roughly 50-minute opera composed by Evan Mack with libretto by Joshua McGuire. Directed by Professor Dawn Pierce, the production follows 11-year-old Alan as he learns to manage his anger, represented by an imaginary dragon. The opera combines music, humor and storytelling to explore emotional awareness, perseverance and self-confidence.
