Aedan Borges wills Case football to upset over champ Fairhaven in MIAA playoffs

FAIRHAVEN — After losing a thriller at Alumni Field last month, first-year head coach Mike Cloutier and the No. 11 Joseph Case football team wanted another shot against defending Division 6 Super Bowl champion Fairhaven. What transpired in Thursday's Division 6 Round of 16 playoff game was nearly a replica of the first contest as both teams went blow for blow. This time it was the Cardinals who managed to pull out an upset win over the Blue Devils. Aedan Borges scored six touchdowns, including the eventual game-winner on a fumble recovery for a score midway through the fourth quarter to lift Case to an incredible 42-37 victory over No. 6 Fairhaven. Watch MA high school football on NFHS With the win, the Cardinals (7-2) move on the Elite 8 for the first time in school history and snapped the Blue Devils' 15-game unbeaten win streak that dated back to last season. Case won its first playoff game since 1992, snapping a 34-year drought. "I could not be more proud of this team, Borges and the fight from everybody," Cloutier said. Three Brockton High seniors earn National Merit recognition

BROCKTON — Out of more than 1.2 million students nationwide, three Brockton High seniors stood out. Axel Sanford, Esdras Yeme Castillo and Isabelle Tao scored among the top 50,000 students on the Preliminary SAT (PSAT), earning letters of commendation from the National Merit Scholarship program for their "outstanding ability and potential for academic success in college," according to the program's website. The students qualified on their scores during their junior year. While they did not make it into the top 16,000 students who continue on in the scholarship competition, their achievement drew praise locally. Jorge Vega, a former Brockton school committee member, wrote on social media about their achievement, “Count this as another reminder to never confuse our school districts' [sic] need to improve with a need for improved students.” “The part that often gets ignored is that they're NOT an anomaly,” he added. The Enterprise spoke with the three students to get a sense for who they are as scholars. Axel Sanford Axel plans to major in art history in college, and hopes to one day work in museums or academia. As a child, he often visited the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, he recalled, sitting in the

Rockland football brackets halftime with big plays in blowout playoff win

ROCKLAND -- Momentum can be fleeting in the playoffs. The Rockland High football team had it in spades in the first quarter on Thursday, Nov. 5, grabbing a two-score lead and threatening to turn its Division 7 first-round playoff matchup against South Hadley into a quick knockout. But a turnover and a dropped third-down pass that could have gone for score blunted the Bulldogs' push. The underdog Tigers were hanging around late in the second quarter and threatening to narrow the deficit. So Rockland simply grabbed the momentum back with both hands and never let it go again. St. John’s (Shrewsbury) football cruises past Brockton in MIAA playoffs

SHREWSBURY -- There wasn't a better time or place for Aiden Dagnello to rumble into the end zone for his first career touchdown as a member of the St. John's Shrewsbury football team. The Pioneers put together a scoring party in the first round of the MIAA Division 1 state tournament, taking down Brockton 58-18 on Thursday, Nov. 5. St. John’s spoiled the playoff debut of first-year Brockton head coach Mike Norman Jr. despite a strong start that saw Brockton take an early lead in the first quarter. “We came out and threw the first punch, but we have to continue to ride that high and we haven’t done that,” said Norman Jr. “When you can’t, results like this happen." On the other side, Dagnello didn't just take part in the scoring party on Thursday. He was the life of it. St. John's (Shrewsbury) led Brockton 17-6 with just over seven minutes remaining in the second quarter when the 6-2, 295-pound defensive lineman tipped a pass from Brockton senior quarterback Marcio Semedo and tracked it in the air at the Boxer 40-yard line for an interception return touchdown. “I almost had one last week, but I dropped it,” Dagnello said.
