Josh Bailly: Building a Life That Fits
For Josh Bailly, woodworking was never part of the plan. Growing up on a small grain farm in North Dakota’s Red River Valley, Bailly didn’t have a high school woodshop to introduce him to the craft. He didn’t study it in college, either. Instead, he earned a biology degree from the University of Minnesota Duluth, worked seasonal field jobs surveying forests across the Arrowhead, and spent winters doing construction. Woodworking came later, almost by accident.

Ashland's Bay Front power plant marks 110 years
Xcel Energy’s Bay Front Power Plant on the shore of Chequamegon Bay in Ashland marked its 110th anniversary Wednesday, Oct. 14, as company officials, retired plant employees and area residents gathered to celebrate and tour the historic facility, which remains an active part of Xcel’s electric system. Bay Front began operating in 1916. Built by the Ashland Light, Power and Street Railway Company, it brought reliable power to Ashland homes, businesses and factories, burning coal delivered over what was then the city’s well-developed rail network. In 1922, Lake Superior District Power Co. took over the plant and ran it as an independent utility until Northern States Power acquired the company in 1986. NSP became part of Xcel Energy in 2000. Xcel says Bay Front was the first commercial power plant in the nation to generate electricity from biomass. The plant stopped burning coal entirely in 2020, completing a shift that began in the 1970s, when two Bay Front employees showed that wood waste could fire the boilers that make the steam used to generate electricity. “We have a can-do attitude and spirit here,” said Brendon Shields, senior operations manager at Bay Front. “It’s all about making things work. Heating, cooling, and dehumidification strategies that protect workers and building materials during construction
Whether you’re in Duluth, Minn., in January or Houston, Tex., in August, keeping a construction project at a comfortable temperature is important not only for the crews working on the building but also for some of the products and processes that are important in constructing the home. Pouring concrete, finishing drywall, and tiling are a few examples. Just as important is managing moisture inside the structure as construction progresses. Depending on the climate, that might mean adding heat, providing cooling, removing moisture, or some combination of all three.
